{"id":49341,"date":"2023-10-28T16:34:06","date_gmt":"2023-10-28T16:34:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/mozambique\/all-news\/totalenergies-targets-fid-on-matola-lng-by-sept-2024"},"modified":"2023-10-28T17:53:50","modified_gmt":"2023-10-28T17:53:50","slug":"totalenergies-targets-fid-on-matola-lng-by-sept-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/mozambique\/all-news\/totalenergies-targets-fid-on-matola-lng-by-sept-2024","title":{"rendered":"TotalEnergies targets FID on Matola LNG by Sept 2024"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>French energy company TotalEnergies TTEF.PA expects to take a final investment decision (FID) on a planned new liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal at Mozambique\u2019s Matola port by September next year, a spokesperson said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The Matola terminal could become South Africa\u2019s first major LNG supplier at a time government wants to significantly expand its domestic gas market but faces a gas supply crunch as onshore gas fields operated in Mozambique by Sasol SOLJ.J start running dry within a few years.<\/p>\n<p>TotalEnergies is partnering with South Africa\u2019s privately-held Gigajoule and Mozambican entities to develop the terminal, seen as vital to supply South Africa with gas, at an estimated cost of $550 million.<\/p>\n<p>The LNG terminal will receive shipments of gas to a permanently moored floating storage and regasification unit in Matola harbour, close to Mozambique\u2019s capital Maputo, although delays in finalizing gas purchase agreements has caused its development to be pushed back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMatola LNG aims to provide primarily power to South Africa which faces serious energy issues with recurrent loadsheddings (power cuts) and whose current power generation comes from coal-fired power plants,\u201d a spokesperson for TotalEnergies said in an emailed response to questions.<\/p>\n<p>Mozambique supplies the bulk of South Africa\u2019s gas intended for industrial users via the Rompco pipeline.<\/p>\n<p>The Matola LNG terminal forms part of a larger project that links it to a combined-cycle gas power plant with capacity for up to 2,000 megawatts and is seen as a vital enabler to expand power exports within the Southern Africa region.<\/p>\n<p>Matola is separate from Total\u2019s $20 billion LNG development to the north of Mozambique that was disrupted by insurgents linked to Islamic State, although the French oil major wants to restart the project this year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For More News And Analysis About <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/mozambique\">Mozambique<\/a> Follow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/\">Africa-Press<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa-Press &#8211; Mozambique.
