Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Frelimo\u2019s Political Commission considers that the municipal elections of October 11th were an \u201cinternally democratic and transparent\u201d exercise.<\/p>\n

The Political Commission of the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (Frelimo) argues that \u201cthe post-election period must be a moment of reflection and unity for all Mozambicans\u201d, and strongly condemns \u201cthe incidents that culminated in the loss of human lives and injuries, the destruction of public and private assets, reiterating the call for constructive dialogue for effective and lasting peace\u201d according to a statement issued after a meeting of the ruling party\u2019s most important body.<\/p>\n

At issue are the skirmishes that took place in various parts of the country on Friday (27-10), following the marches led by the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo) to protest the results of the October 11 elections, where Frelimo was announced as the winner in 64 of the 65 municipalities.<\/p>\n

In the document, the Frelimo Political Commission considers that the local elections were the \u201cculmination of an internally democratic and transparent exercise\u201d, thanking members and supporters for the \u201cvote cast for the party\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Political Commission also calls on political parties and citizens in general to distance themselves from acts that jeopardise the environment of peace, unity, civility, harmonious coexistence and citizenship of Mozambicans,\u201d the statement reads.<\/p>\n

The sixth local elections in Mozambique have been the target of harsh criticism from opposition parties and civil society, who see \u201cmega fraud\u201d in the ballot, with emphasis on the falsification of notices and the stuffing of ballot boxes in favour of the ruling party. Some district courts have acknowledged irregularities in the process.<\/p>\n
