Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The president of the Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM), the country\u2019s third-largest parliamentary party, went to the Attorney General\u2019s Office (PGR) on Wednesday to \u201cpressure\u201d the public prosecutor to investigate indications of electoral offences reported by the party.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are here to hear from the Public Prosecutor\u2019s Office how these cases [relating to the elections] are going because we cannot go to the end of this entire process without there being a reaction from the PGR,\u201d MDM leader Lutero Simango told the media at the door of the Attorney General\u2019s Office in Maputo.<\/p>\n

According to Simango, illegal acts highlighted by the took place from voter registration right through to voting day in the October local elections, whose processes are still ongoing at the Constitutional Council.<\/p>\n

The MDM president said he went to the PGR \u201csimply to apply legal pressure\u201d, noting that, in addition to a political battle, the party is also in a legal battle.<\/p>\n

The local elections in Mozambique have been the target of harsh criticism from opposition parties and civil society, who denounce a \u201cmega fraud\u201d in the ballot, with the emphasis on the falsification of notices, and some district court decisions acknowledging irregularities in the process.<\/p>\n

The Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), the main country\u2019s opposition party, has been promoting marches contesting the results of the elections, bringing together thousands of people in different parts of the country to demand the \u201crestitution of electoral truth\u201d.<\/p>\n

More than 300 people have been detained and several injured in various parts of the country, especially in the cities of Nampula, Nacala-Porto and Maputo, as a result of the skirmishes between authorities and protesters on Friday.<\/p>\n

The sixth municipal elections in Mozambique took place in 65 municipalities across the country on October 11, including 12 new municipalities, which went to vote for the first time.<\/p>\n

The results presented by the National Elections Commission (CNE) of Mozambique indicate victory for the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (Frelimo \u2013 the ruling party) in 64 of the country\u2019s 65 municipalities, with the MDM winning in one \u2013 Beira.<\/p>\n

Under Mozambican electoral legislation, the results still have to be validated and proclaimed by the Constitutional Council.<\/p>\n
