Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Tanzania, Juary Yusuf Makamba, defended, this Friday, in Luanda, the need to continue joining efforts to preserve and maintain peace in the region.<\/p>\n

The minister made this statement at the opening of the extraordinary session of the SADC Summit, having mentioned that it is imperative to maintain peace, stability and security in the region, important factors for regional integration and sustainable development.<\/p>\n

The official said that the extraordinary meeting of the body\u2019s ministerial committee was called to discuss the implementation of the decision of the 43rd SADC Summit held in August this year, in the Angolan capital, in relation to the deployment of the mission in the DRC.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe presence at this meeting constitutes a clear testimony of the importance attached to the integration of the SADC Development Agenda, which is based on peace, security and sustainable stability\u201d, he reinforced.<\/p>\n

Regarding the political situation in the DRC, he recalled that following the resurgence of the M23 rebel group and the show of force against the population in the east, SADC carried out an assessment mission on the ground, to assess the level of threat and security, as well as preparing recommendations that could enable the taking of appropriate measures to support the government in its efforts to combat armed groups and restore peace and stability.<\/p>\n

He assured SADC\u2019s unequivocal support for the establishment of peace and security for the citizens of the RCD, so that they can live in a peaceful and secure environment that promotes sustainable development.<\/p>\n

He encouraged and requested member states to timely honor their statutory contributions, so that the mission can begin a strong position, with the aim of restoring peace and security in eastern DRC.<\/p>\n

Juary Yusuf Makamba reported that the meeting of defense commanders, including the East African community, of the International Conference of the Great Lakes Region, which took place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in October this year, removed the need for harmonization and coordination of calendars.<\/p>\n

It ushered in a fruitful meeting that will contribute with directives and concrete decisions to reinforce proactive decisions and ensure lasting peace and stability in eastern DRC and the entire SADC region.<\/p>\n

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) is an inter-governmental organization, created in 1992, dedicated to socio-economic cooperation and integration in the region, as well as cooperation in political and security matters.<\/p>\n

The SADC region includes Angola, Botswana, Comoros, Democratic Republic of Congo, eSwatini, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.<\/p>\n
