Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The Italian government intends to disburse three million Euros (3.2 million dollars at the current exchange rate) for mangrove restoration on Inhaca Island, in Maputo Bay.<\/p>\n

According to the head of Environment at the Italian Agency for Cooperation and Development, Paolo Miste\u0301, cited by Ra\u0301dio Moc\u0327ambique, studies are underway to determine the areas that will benefit from the project.<\/p>\n

The study is being carried out by Maputo\u2019s Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM), in partnership with the Mozambican Institute of Oceanography and the Inhaca Maritime Biology Station (EBMI). It should be completed this year.<\/p>\n

He explained that the initiative also focuses on raising awareness among coastal dwellers about mangrove management.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe project envisages creating ways for the people who harvest mangroves to survive\u201d, he said, adding that \u201cItaly would also support the governments of Mozambique and Zimbabwe with five million Euros for the management and restoration of the Miombo Forest.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Miombo Forest project between Mozambique and Zimbabwe will start in the first half of next year and end in 2027.<\/p>\n

As part of this, the leaders of southern Africa signed the Maputo Declaration last year for the protection and conservation of Miombo woodland ecosystems in the region.<\/p>\n
