Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) in Nampula say that only four individuals were injured in clashes between the corporation and Renamo members demonstrating in the city of Angoche last Thursday (16-11) afternoon.<\/p>\n

This Friday (17-11) morning, police spokesperson Zacarias Nacute presented the police version of events, where not even a single death was mentioned, characterising it as primarily a public order matter.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Renamo party expressed its intention to carry out marches to contest the results of the last elections and, in all municipalities in our province of Nampula, the process ran smoothly and with due protection from PRM members,\u201d Nacute began, apparently oblivious to the urban war taking place in Nampula and Nacala cities, where the lives of innocent people and those with no interest in the proceedings were lost, shortly after the National Elections Commission (CNE) presented the general count.<\/p>\n

\u201cHowever,\u201d Nacute continued, \u201cin the municipality of Angoche, members and supporters of the Renamo party disobeyed the loyal precepts that guide the holding of any kind of demonstration, carrying [with them] blunt instruments and initiating acts of violence, among other illegalities.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Police of the Republic of Mozambique,\u201d Nacute\u2019s version went on, \u201cin the person of the district commander, approached the district party delegate, as well as the campaign leader, to call them to common sense, but to no avail. These [Renamo members], in response, threw stones at the Police of the Republic of Mozambique, and tried to invade the building from which the district government operates, among other illegalities […].\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTherefore, the police had to intervene and as a response to this act of restoring public order and tranquillity, four citizens suffered injuries, two on the arm and two on the leg, and another five citizens were arrested for disobeying the elementary rules of holding a demonstration, as well as destabilising order and public safety at that point in our province [Angoche],\u201d his account concluded.<\/p>\n

No questions were taken.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the Jornal Ikweli correspondent in Angoche noted that an elderly woman was injured when she was run over by a vehicle while trying to escape, and that the injured people are still in hospital, with one more seriously injured having to be transferred to Nampula Central hospital.<\/p>\n

Domingos Dauda Ambasse, Renamo district delegate in Angoche, accuses the PRM of attempting to murder his members and denies that they had wielded blunt instruments at the time of the events, much less intending to raid the district government building.<\/p>\n
