Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi on Monday urged the residents of the village of Pontia, in Magude district, in Maputo province, to use water rationally, given the likely scarcity of water caused by climate change.<\/p>\n

He was speaking at the inauguration of a new water supply system, under the government\u2019s Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Programme (Pronasar).<\/p>\n

\u201cI would like to appeal to everyone to make conscious and rational use of this service\u201d, he stressed. \u201cLet us protect this system in two ways. First, let\u2019s not waste water. This water may run out one day, so let\u2019s save it. Second, we must keep this system safe and not vandalise it\u201d.<\/p>\n

He urged the public to be vigilant against the outbreak of water-borne diseases such as cholera. \u201cWe want the water supply system we are inaugurating today to contribute to improved sanitation and to reduce the likelihood of outbreaks of cholera\u201d, Nyusi said.<\/p>\n

Six water supply systems were inaugurated in Maputo province on Monday \u2013 two in Magude, two in Matutuine district (inaugurated by provincial governor Julio Parruque, and two in Moamba (inaugurated by the Secretary of State for the Province, Judite Mussacula).<\/p>\n

Two of these systems, Nyusi said, contain desalination plants, to make life easier for people living in areas with brackish water.<\/p>\n

The new systems cost 123 million meticais (about two million US dollars, at the current exchange rate).<\/p>\n

Thanks to the new systems, the percentage of the population of Maputo province with access to safe drinking water has risen from 74 to 76 per cent.<\/p>\n

Nyusi also urged the residents of Pontia to remain alert to warnings from the authorities of possible floods in the current rainy season. In particular, people living in flood-prone areas must be made aware of the dangers they may face.<\/p>\n

Recently, the Mozambican relief agency, the National Disaster Management Institute (INGD) announced that it needs 14.3 billion meticais to face the likely needs imposed by the 2023-2024 rainy season, but so far only 4.3 billion meticais are available.<\/p>\n
