Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The Mozambican head of state, Filipe Nyusi, has extended condolences to the President of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan, following the dozens of deaths caused by torrential rains in the north of his country.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn this moment of pain, I would like to express, on behalf of the People and Government of the Republic of Mozambique and myself, our heartfelt condolences,\u201d Filipe Nyusi writes in a note distributed by the Mozambican presidency yesterday.<\/p>\n

According to a report released on Monday by Tanzanian authorities, at least 68 people died in landslides caused by torrential rains in the north of the country, which borders, to the south, the Mozambican provinces of Niassa and Cabo Delgado.<\/p>\n

The rains have since Saturday affected the city of Katesh, in northern Tanzania, around 300 kilometres north of the capital Dodoma, causing landslides that swept away dozens of vehicles and houses.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile we express feelings of solidarity, we are confident that under your wise leadership the Government and people of Tanzania will recover from this tragedy as quickly as possible,\u201d President Nyusi adds.<\/p>\n

Images broadcast by local television stations showed streets littered with wrecked houses, and transport and electricity supplies disrupted.<\/p>\n

East Africa has for weeks been lashed by torrential rains and floods linked to the El Nin\u0303o meteorological phenomenon, displacing more than a million people in Somalia and causing more than 300 deaths in the region.<\/p>\n

The El Nin\u0303o phenomenon, generally associated with rising temperatures and drought in parts of the world and torrential rains in others, is expected to continue until April.<\/p>\n
