Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The Mozambican president, Filipe Nyusi, said that increasing the minimum period of military service from two to five years aims to guarantee the retention of experienced personnel.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis review is aimed at the retention and availability of experienced personnel. I have experienced cases where my generals were desperate after forming special forces \u2013 with knowledge that others did not have \u2013 but, because they had already completed two years, personnel left before carrying out their missions,\u201d Filipe Nyusi said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The Mozambican head of state was speaking during the closing of the 14th training course for sergeants of the permanent staff of the Armed Defence Forces of Mozambique in Boane, Maputo province.<\/p>\n

Two weeks ago, the Mozambican parliament generally approved an increase in the minimum period of military service from two to five years, a change that the government considers necessary for the professionalisation and retention of military personnel in the armed forces.<\/p>\n

For Filipe Nyusi, the change aims to avoid \u201cwaste\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was wasteful and it involved costs. I corrected this,\u201d Nyusi said.<\/p>\n

The revision to the Military Service Law increases from two to five years the minimum period of service in the general troops and from two to six years in the special forces.<\/p>\n

The new law introduces direct conscription into the FADM upon authorization from the Minister of National Defence, along with criminal liability for absentee conscripts and military personnel, and introduces the possibility of fines for directors of public and private institutions who do not require the presentation of a declaration of regularised status from employees.<\/p>\n

The law maintains the minimum age of 18 and maximum age of 35 for entry into military service in Mozambique.<\/p>\n
