Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The Maputo Floating Power Plant Project, which will be developed by the Turkish company Karpower Global DMCC (Karpowership), in partnership with the Mozambican publicly owned electricity company, EDM, will be submitted to a second public consultation on 19 December, according to Tuesday\u2019s issue of the independent newssheet \u201cCarta de Moc\u0327ambique.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to the paper, the project aims to operate a Floating Thermoelectric Power Plant with an installed capacity of 415 megawatts.<\/p>\n

The project includes a four kilometre transmission line linking the plant to the 275 KV substation in the city of Matola, and a three kilometer gas pipeline connected to the Maputo Thermal Power Plant (CTM) to transfer natural gas to the Kapowership Plant which will be located in the Espi\u0301rito Santo Estuary in Maputo Port.<\/p>\n

During the first public consultation, which took place in November 2022, the project faced strong opposition on environmental grounds. The Technical Director of the environmental studies company Impacto, John Hatton said the project may cause oil leaks or spills, fires and explosions, as well as collisions with other ships.<\/p>\n

Garcez Narcy, vice-president of the Association of Salt Producers and Traders, said that with the implementation of this power plant, eight salt pans, located in Matola, which employ over 100 people, could be on the verge of closure due to the environmental impact. The salt pans produce salt for about three million Mozambicans.<\/p>\n

At the time, Karpowership representatives guaranteed that they would continue with the studies and, if necessary, compensate the communities that could lose jobs.<\/p>\n

The project, whose budget has not yet been released, will be operational for at least three years.<\/p>\n
