Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Sunday that the credibility and authority of the UN Security Council suffered significant damage over the Gaza conflict.<\/p>\n \u201cThe delay comes at a cost, the council’s authority and credibility were severely undermined and the resolution is not being implemented,\u201d Guterres said about the previously passed UN resolution calling for more humanitarian aid.<\/p>\n Speaking at the Doha Forum held in Qatar, Guterres criticized the UN Security Council\u2019s \u201cresounding silence\u201d over the Gaza conflict.<\/p>\n \u201cThe horrific attacks by Hamas on Oct. 7, followed by the relentless Israeli bombardment of Gaza were met by a resounding silence from the Council. After more than one month, the Council finally passed the resolution, which I welcome,\u201d he said, but regretted that the resolution is not being implemented.<\/p>\n Guterres underlined that \u201cthere is no effective protection of civilians in Gaza.\u201d<\/p>\n He called for a humanitarian cease-fire in the Gaza Strip amid Israeli bombardment of the Palestinian territory.<\/p>\n \u201cThe number of civilian casualties in Gaza in such a short period is totally unprecedented,\u201d he said, noting that \u201cthe health care system is collapsing.\u201d<\/p>\n The UN chief expected \u201cpublic order to completely break down soon and then even a worse situation could unfold, including epidemic diseases and increased pressure for mass displacement into Egypt.\u201d<\/p>\n Guterres called on the UN Security Council \u201cto press to avert the humanitarian catastrophe.\u201d<\/p>\n He also reiterated his \u201cappeal for a humanitarian cease-fire to be declared.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cRegrettably, the Security Council failed to do it but that does not make it less necessary, so I can promise I will not give up,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n The US vetoed a UN Security Council draft resolution on Friday that demanded an immediate cease-fire to halt the ongoing bloodshed in the Gaza Strip as the death toll continues to mount.<\/p>\n Israel resumed its military offensive on the Gaza Strip on Dec. 1 after the end of a week-long humanitarian pause with Hamas.<\/p>\n Nearly 18,000 Palestinians have been killed and more than 49,229 others injured in relentless air and ground attacks on the enclave since Oct. 7 following the cross-border attack by Hamas.<\/p>\n The Israeli death toll in the Hamas attack stood at 1,200, according to official figures.<\/p>\n For More News And Analysis About Mozambique<\/a> Follow Africa-Press<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" * Writing by Esra Tekin in Istanbul Africa-Press – Mozambique.
