Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Vena\u0302ncio Mondlane and his party (Renamo) insist on challenging the results of the last municipal elections in the country\u2019s capital.<\/p>\n

This Tuesday, Renamo returned to the Attorney General\u2019s Office to submit an appeal seeking the annulment of the Constitutional Council judgement proclaiming the result of the vote on October 11th.<\/p>\n

Everything was going well until Vena\u0302ncio Mondlane and his team went to the PGR facilities.<\/p>\n

Journalists were prevented from entering, and a police contingent positioned itself outside the PGR while the process unfolded.<\/p>\n

Without giving any reason, the police prevented journalists from filming or conducting interviews near the institution, which for Mondlane itself constituted a violation of rights.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is no need for this apparatus. This is a violation of the right to information and of the press itself,\u201d he commented.<\/p>\n

But none of this prevented Renamo from submitting its appeal.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have submitted an extraordinary appeal, requesting that the PGR order that the ruling proclaiming the results of the local elections be annulled,\u201d said Renamo representative Glo\u0301ria Salvador.<\/p>\n

Mondlane said that he was aware that the decisions of the Constitutional Council cannot in theory be appealed, but that he remained hopeful that he would succeed in his purpose.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe rulings of the Constitutional Council are unappealable. But if the body takes a decision that goes beyond its powers and violates some basic principle, such as justice and equality, it means that the ruling was made in violation of the law and the Constitution of the Republic,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n

According to the leader of the Renamo list, the Constitutional Council\u2019s ruling contains just such errors.<\/p>\n

\u201cFirstly, the ruling contains the defect of usurpation of legislative power, as it usurped the powers of the Assembly of the Republic. The second is the lack of justification, which even the Supreme Court has already referred to.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vena\u0302ncio Mondlane reiterated that protest marches would continue, with the last for this year scheduled for Saturday (16-12).<\/p>\n
