Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The Mozambican Network of Human Rights Defenders maintains that at least 27 people were killed by the police in post-election violence in Nampula province, in the north of the country.<\/p>\n

Adriano Nuvunga, president of the Mozambican Network of Human Rights Defenders, said that the deaths occurred during peaceful demonstrations led by Renamo, the main opposition party, which is contesting the results of the October 11 local elections, and is threatening to take the State to court.<\/p>\n

The complaint was made on the sidelines of a human rights defenders summit in Maputo this Wednesday, held under the motto \u201c25 years of the UN Declaration on Human Rights Defenders: Challenges and opportunities for the protection of activism in Mozambique\u201d.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Lusa news agency Wednesday reported that a 15-year-old boy was fatally shot by a police officer in Marromeu during a protest against the election results giving Frelimo victory in the repeat vote there.<\/p>\n

The news was confirmed by Sofala provincial PRM spokesperson De\u0301rcio Chacate, who said that a case was being opened and that the officer in question was detained at Marromeu police station.<\/p>\n

On Monday, PRM general commander Bernardino Rafael reported that at least two Mozambican police officers were injured and four people were arrested in rioting during the repeat elections on Sunday.<\/p>\n

Four people were also arrested in Gurue\u0301, two for electoral offences and two for barricading public roads. In Gurue\u0301 district, Zambe\u0301zia province, riots were recorded, with people throwing stones and officers firing rubber bullets, tear gas and \u201creal bullets\u201d to disperse the crowd. One person was injured, according to the police themselves.<\/p>\n

A total of 53,270 voters in four municipalities were summoned to recast their vote on Sunday. The October 11th municipal elections were strongly contested by the opposition and civil society, who denounced an alleged \u201cmega-fraud\u201d.<\/p>\n
