Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Audrey Azoulay, the Director-General of UNESCO, has condemned the killing of journalist Joa\u0303o Fernando Chamusse in KaTembe, in the province of Maputo, in Mozambique on 14 December 2023.<\/p>\n

\u201cI condemn the killing of Joa\u0303o Chamusse, and urge an investigation into the circumstances. Impunity for such crimes must not be tolerated and the perpetrators must be brought to justice\u201d.<\/p>\n

UNESCO Director-General<\/p>\n

Joa\u0303o Chamusse was a veteran journalist, and the co-owner and editor of online newspaper Ponto por Ponto, as well as a commentator on TV Sucesso. Earlier in his career he had co-founded the Canal de Moc\u0327ambique newspaper and had worked as a reporter at the Mediafax newspaper. He was killed outside of his home.<\/p>\n

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and by coordinating the implementation of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.<\/p>\n

2023 has been a particularly deadly year for journalists who work in conflict zones, with killings almost doubling compared to the past 3 years.<\/p>\n

These last 3 months have been the deadliest quarter for journalists in conflict zones since at least 2007, with 27 deaths.<\/p>\n
