Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Mozambique\u2019s relief agency, the National Disaster Management Institute (INGD), has warned that roads in some regions in the districts of Magude, Manhic\u0327a and Marracuene, in Maputo province, are impassable due to the rising water levels of the Incomati River resulting from increased discharges in neighboring countries.<\/p>\n

According to the INGD Maputo provincial delegate, Sara Matchie, who was speaking to reporters on Wednesday, the INGD is already taking steps to prevent the isolation of some regions in the face of rising flow levels in the main river basins in the province.<\/p>\n

The measures, she said, include the repositioning of boats to respond to possible cases of isolation of some communities.<\/p>\n

Matchie explained that a survey is currently underway to assess the needs of each region.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe information available indicates that most of the dams located upstream of Maputo province are filled to 90 percent of their storage capacity. This means that if there are rains in the upstream countries, it may be necessary to increase discharges to guarantee the integrity of the dams\u201d, she said.<\/p>\n

Matchie adds that the monitoring carried out by the INGD has recorded around a thousand hectares of crops flooded in the districts of Manhic\u0327a and Magude.<\/p>\n

She stressed that so far there has been no warning of extreme events in Maputo province, and called on the population to remain in a state of readiness.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s important to stress that we still don\u2019t have any alerts for extreme events, but even so, we are already taking action to minimize the impacts of the current rainy season\u201d, she said.<\/p>\n
