Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The Mozambican president will be paying a working visit to India from Tuesday to \u201cstrengthen relations of friendship and co-operation\u201d with that Asian country, an official statement said.<\/p>\n

The visit is the result of an invitation from the Indian prime minister, Narendra Modi, and will last four days, according to the Mozambican president\u2019s office.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe visit of the Mozambican head of state to India is part of the context of strengthening and deepening relations of friendship and cooperation between the two countries and promoting investment opportunities in Mozambique,\u201d said the Presidency, adding that the head of state will also take part in the 10th edition of the Gujarat Global Summit.<\/p>\n

Filipe Nyusi\u2019s visit comes at a time when a dispute between two companies in court over the liberalisation of pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan) exports to India has led to dozens of tonnes being blocked at Mozambican ports.<\/p>\n

At the end of December, the Confederation of Economic Associations of Mozambique \u2013 CTA clarified that the detained pigeon peas are already being exported to India, reiterating \u201cfree access to the market\u201d as the best option to avoid similar problems.<\/p>\n

The export of pigeon peas to India, which is the main market for this product, is the result of a memorandum of understanding with Mozambique, signed in 2016, providing for exemption from customs duties for Indian importers.<\/p>\n

India is the largest producer and consumer of pigeon peas, with the Indian press indicating in recent weeks that the price of the product in the country has risen by 10% in two months, precisely because of the difficulties in importing from Mozambique.<\/p>\n
