Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>At least 43 people died and another 45 were seriously injured as a result of road accidents during the festive season in Mozambique, the commander-general of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) announced on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Bernardino Rafael pointed to excessive speed, drunk driving and poor pedestrian behaviour as the main causes of road accidents, asking for collective reflection on the incidents to reduce these rates in the country, especially during Christmas and New Year celebrations.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe urge road users to reflect on this number of accidents, injuries and deaths,\u201d Rafael said at a press conference taking stock of the festive season in Ressano Garcia, in Maputo province.<\/p>\n

According to Rafael, since December and until this Wednesday, during which period police operations \u2018Esperanc\u0327a\u2019 and \u2018Benguera\u2019 were in force, 41 road accidents were recorded, resulting in 43 deaths, 45 serious and 50 minor injuries, in addition to material damage.<\/p>\n

In addition to road accidents, in the 2023\/2024 festive season, the Mozambican police also recorded 17 deaths and two missing people as a result of 12 maritime incidents, with the main causes being \u201cvessels lacking conditions to navigate and bathers in a state of intoxication\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have two still missing, with no hope of finding them and, therefore, in practice we have 19 deaths resulting from drownings and other maritime incidents on our coast and in inland waters,\u201d Rafael said.<\/p>\n

In the same period, authorities also registered 204 criminal cases, 196 of which were resolved.<\/p>\n
