Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The value of Mozambican tobacco exports fell 25% in the first nine months of 2023, compared to the previous year, to US$49.4 million, according to central bank figures to which Lusa had access on Monday.<\/p>\n

According to a statistical report from the Bank of Mozambique, tobacco exports in the first three quarters of 2022 (January to September) amounted to US$66.4 million (\u20ac60.6 million).<\/p>\n

In the first three quarters of 2023, according to the same report, these tobacco exports fell to US$49.4 million (\u20ac45.1 million).<\/p>\n

According to a report by the World Health Organization (WHO), released in 2023, Mozambique has the eighth largest tobacco growing area in the world. With tobacco cultivated over 91,469 hectares, Mozambique is third largest grower in the African region after Zimbabwe (112,770 hectares) and Malawi (100,962).<\/p>\n

Brazil, with the third largest cultivation area in the world, at 357,230 hectares, and Mozambique are the only Portuguese-speaking countries referenced in the WHO report, which identifies the 50 countries with the largest cultivation area of the tobacco plant, formerly classified as medicinal and currently the target of criticism and political measures against its mass use.<\/p>\n
