Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The German government will provide \u20ac90 million to finance coastal protection projects, green infrastructure and economic and social development within the scope of the partnership with Mozambique, the German ambassador in Maputo announced on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have guaranteed around \u20ac90 million, and a large part of this intervention is from our bilateral cooperation,\u201d explained Ambassador Ronald Mu\u0308nch, speaking to journalists during his visit to Beira, the capital of Sofala province, in the centre of the country.<\/p>\n

He added that one of the priorities in this package made available by the German government to Mozambique is Beira, with around \u20ac45 million, which will be allocated in part to the construction of the coastal protection wall, the financing of the second phase of rehabilitation of green infrastructure and social projects in local communities.<\/p>\n

\u201cA large part of this partnership with Beira will provide opportunities for new projects and the continuation of coastal protection,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Thirty million euros of the \u20ac45 million for projects in Beira will be used to finance the city\u2019s coastal protection project. Ambassador Ronald Mu\u0308nch explained that, from the point of view of structuring the project, the tender to hire the contractor will be launched next June and the work will start soon afterwards.<\/p>\n

In addition to Germany, the World Bank is contributing to the coastal protection project in Beira, one of the areas most affected by the effects of climate change, with cyclones Idai, Kenneth and Freddy passing through in recent years.<\/p>\n

The coastal protection works consist of building a reinforced concrete wall, and geophysical studies have already been carried out with a view to building dykes to hold back seawater.<\/p>\n
