Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Canada today announced an additional financial contribution of $500,000 Canadian dollars to the peace process basket fund in support of reintegration and reconciliation efforts.<\/p>\n

The announcement was made by Canada\u2019s Ambassador for Women, Peace, and Security, Jacqueline O\u2019Neill, accompanied by the High Commissioner for Canada in Mozambique, Sara Nicholls, this Wednesday, at the Avani Hotel (Cabo Delgado room), at 12:00 in Pemba, at the close of Jacqueline O\u2019Neill\u2019s three-day mission to Mozambique.<\/p>\n

Since the signing of the Maputo Accord for Peace and National Reconciliation in 2019, the government, RENAMO, and the people of Mozambique have taken important actions to pave a path toward peace and security.<\/p>\n

Canada is proud to have supported the peace agreement since its inception and applauds the Peace Process Secretariat and the United Nations Office for Project Services for their dedication to ensuring that all stakeholders were able to follow through on their commitments.<\/p>\n

Addressing civil society groups this past Monday in Maputo, Ambassador O\u2019Neill commended Mozambique\u2019s role in the Women, Peace, and Security agenda at regional and global levels through its seat in the United Nations Security Council, further stating that \u201cpeace is not the signing of an accord, but the hard work going on right now. Canada sees, recognizes, and stands in solidarity with Mozambique. \u201c<\/p>\n

It is within this context that Canada announced an additional financial contribution of $500,000 Canadian dollars to the peace process basket fund in support of reintegration and reconciliation efforts. This additional funding brings Canada\u2019s total contribution to the national peace process in Mozambique to $5M CAD since 2019.<\/p>\n

Canada remains committed to supporting Mozambique in its continued efforts to build prosperous, inclusive, and peaceful communities, including through ongoing reconciliation, decentralization, the promotion of gender equality in peacebuilding, and the protection of human rights.<\/p>\n
