Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The leader of the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), Ossufo Momade, on Tuesday warned the mayors of the main opposition party of the \u201cchaos\u201d to be created by the Frelimo government in the municipal territories that will be administered by the opposition.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have prepared our mayors to expect social and political adversity, often imposed by the regime, which has embarrassed and created chaos in the administration in the local councils won by the opposition parties,\u201d said Momade, in a message he posted on his Facebook page, after a meeting with the mayors of the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), elected in the local elections on 11 October.<\/p>\n

The leader of the main opposition party said that the mayors who belong to the organisation should commit themselves to transforming Mozambican cities into urban centres of the future, which provide a quality life for their citizens.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn this occasion, we encourage the elected mayors to remain firm and confident in our manifestos, with the ultimate aim of serving the citizens through participatory, coherent, honest and innovative governance,\u201d declared Ossufo Momade.<\/p>\n

At the meeting, the Renamo leader and the party\u2019s new local government leaders also discussed the organisation of councils and areas of responsibility, the strengthening of activities and joint work.<\/p>\n

Renamo has repeatedly accused the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo) government of preventing the central government from transferring funds to opposition councils, preferring to allocate resources to councils run by the ruling party.<\/p>\n

The main opposition party won in only three of the country\u2019s 65 councils in the 11 October elections, with Frelimo winning in 61 and the Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM) in one.<\/p>\n

The results of the vote have been strongly contested by the opposition, which considers them fraudulent, and several electoral observer organisations have pointed out irregularities in the vote.<\/p>\n

All 65 elected mayors will take office on 7 February.<\/p>\n
