Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The publicly-owned Licungo University, in the central Mozambican city of Quelimane, needs 26 million Meticais (407,000 dollars at the current exchange rate) to repair its infrastructures that were hit by Cyclone Freddy in March 2023.<\/p>\n

According to Licungo University spokesperson, Luck Injage, cited in Monday\u2019s issue of the independent daily \u201cO Pai\u0301s\u201d, the Faculty of Education and the administrative sector were the worst affected and they need reconstruction.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause of this, the two blocks at the campus in Coalane neighbourhood, where the Faculty of Education and the administrative sector are located, were affected. At the time, when we carried out the survey, the entire first semester was affected and, as a result, we were working at half capacity\u201d, Injage said, pointing to major damage in the computer laboratory and library sectors.<\/p>\n

In Zambe\u0301zia, as with other public infrastructures, those of Licungo University have been mapped, with the aim of the provincial government intervening on the basis of the Emergency Rehabilitation Fund after Cyclone Freddy, but so far nothing has been done.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis disbursement is being delayed. We, as an institution, have been finding local alternatives, through our own income, for specific interventions in the classrooms and offices in the Faculty of Education area. Meanwhile, the library, laboratory, auditorium and the entire administrative sector are in need of intervention\u201d, the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n

According to Injage, the government is not channelling the funds to replace the damaged infrastructure, therefore the university is using its own income from tuition fees to carry out some interventions.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn this sense, the rehabilitation is centred on the classrooms, to allow classes to take place while waiting for better days for the completion of the laboratory, library and administrative blocks\u201d, he added.<\/p>\n
