Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Mozambique\u2019s National Teachers\u2019 Association (ANAPRO) is threatening to boycott lessons at the second shift, as well as to stop working any overtime, if the government does not pay them 13 months of overtime which they claim are in arrears.<\/p>\n

According to an ANAPRO statement, the government has not done enough to solve the teachers\u2019 problems and \u201cwe continue to loudly inform the Education Ministry, the central government and society in general that teachers will not work overtime and the second shift in 2024. The demands will continue to escalate until the debt is paid in full.\u201d<\/p>\n

ANAPRO is calling for intervention at the highest level to guide the two ministries involved in the overtime imbroglio (the Education and Finance Ministries) to comply with the law.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe same decree law that establishes teachers\u2019 overtime work does not include terms such as patience, \u2018gradualism\u2019, \u2018verification\u2019 and even less \u2018validation\u2019. These terms have been used by the government to further delay the payment of overtime\u201d, reads the note.<\/p>\n

Teachers claim that overtime has only been paid for two months in some schools.<\/p>\n

The teachers in the Mozambican National Education System also threaten not to work with classes of over 100 pupils in the same room, since overcrowding has been harming the quality of education.<\/p>\n
