Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The new director-general of LAM, the Mozambican airline, Theunis Crous, told Lusa on Friday that he would be putting forward a strategic plan for the company until 2030 and that he intended to expand routes.<\/p>\n

Theunis Crous, who is also the general manager of South Africa\u2019s Fly Modern Ark (FMA), which was appointed by the Mozambican government in April last year to recover LAM, took up the post this week and said that one of the objectives is to continue with the \u201creview of assets\u201d and the \u201cfinancial restructuring\u201d of the company.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are going to review the strategic partnerships with Boeing, Bombardier, Embraer and De Havilland,\u201d explained Crous, adding that the same will be done with the aircraft leasing companies that work with Mozambique Airlines (LAM).<\/p>\n

On the other hand, the new director-general said that \u201cthe government\u2019s vision\u201d for the company\u2019s future will be implemented.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going to work on creating the 2025-2030 Strategic Plan, renewing and standardising the fleet and consolidating the new routes, Maputo \u2013 Lisbon and Maputo \u2013 Cape Town,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The \u201cexpansion of domestic, regional and intercontinental routes\u201d is also among the objectives.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, LAM\u2019s Board of Directors announced that the company\u2019s general manager, Joa\u0303o Carlos Po\u0301 Jorge, was stepping down as part of the company\u2019s restructuring measures. On the same day, he was replaced by Theunis Crous, who will take on the role on an interim basis until 30 April, the period set for the decision to renew the contract with FMA, in which LAM\u2019s new CEO is a partner and its managing director.<\/p>\n

Asked by Lusa if this appointment was a sign of the executive\u2019s confidence in FMA\u2019s work to revitalise LAM, Theunis Crous said that \u201cthe government is the one who has to answer that question\u201d. Even so, he added: \u201cBut I am honoured by the confidence.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Thursday, Mozambique\u2019s minister of transport and communications defended the renewal of the contract with FMA.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat we did at the beginning was to bring in people who could help us as consultants, as advisors on the prudent decisions that should be made about the management, operation of the airlines, and that\u2019s Fly Modern Ark. Unless you give me reasons for them not to continue, as long as you don\u2019t give me reasons for them not to continue, they will continue,\u201d Mateus Magala told the media on the sidelines of a public event in Maputo.<\/p>\n

Fly Modern Ark was contracted in April 2023 to implement a restructuring and recovery plan for LAM within a year, and it is not known whether or not the agreement will be renewed.<\/p>\n

The government official did not clarify, saying that the sector\u2019s plan foresees LAM\u2019s situation stabilising in between one and three years, depending on the dynamics of the process.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s the period we think we can stabilise. Hopefully, it will come sooner because that\u2019s what we want in order to make a definitive decision,\u201d added Mateus Magala.<\/p>\n

The dismissal of Joa\u0303o Carlos Po\u0301 Jorge, who had been general manager since 2018, came after LAM\u2019s restructuring director, Se\u0301rgio Matos, denounced in February a scheme to embezzle money, with losses of around \u20ac3 million, in ticket shops, through automatic payment terminal machines (TPA\/POS) that do not belong to the company.<\/p>\n

According to the Mozambican transport minister, the dismissal of LAM\u2019s director-general was a \u201cnormal\u201d procedure and was due to the need to \u201cadjust the machine\u201d of the company and work with people who can fulfil the parameters required of the flag carrier.<\/p>\n

The Central Office for Combating Corruption (GCCC) has opened a case to investigate alleged corruption schemes in the sale of tickets on the Mozambican airline and in the management of the company\u2019s fleet, a source linked to the investigations told Lusa.<\/p>\n
