Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Meat production in Mozambique increased by 4.5% in 2023, reaching a record 181,792 tonnes, the livestock production report released on Thursday by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MADER) indicates.<\/p>\n

This performance compares with 174,046 tons in 2022.<\/p>\n

According to the document, the growth in 2023 \u2013 by then already double that of 91,381 tons in 2015 \u2013 results from the \u201cintensification in the implementation of measures to control the movement of animals\u201d and \u201ccontrol of cattle theft and clandestine slaughter\u201d, among other factors.<\/p>\n

Beef production alone broke a record of 21,136 tons in 2023, the result of the slaughter of 148,844 cattle and an increase of 5% compared to the previous year.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn 2023, national beef production corresponded to around 94% of projected national consumption of 22,522 tons,\u201d the report reads.<\/p>\n

The production of meat from small ruminants, goats and sheep, also grew by 5%, to 3,926 tons, and chicken meat increased by 4%, to 152,784 tons.<\/p>\n

Mozambique\u2019s production of eggs for consumption grew by 8%, to 28,667,207 dozen, a new record, and that of fresh milk increased by 2% to 2,486,344 litres, with the provinces of Manica and Sofala supplying 70% of the total.<\/p>\n
