Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Linhas Ae\u0301reas de Moc\u0327ambique (LAM) will operate its first cargo plane from March 25th, a Boeing 737-300F presented yesterday by the company, which has invested US$3 million (\u20ac2.74 million) in the new venture, the general director told Lusa.<\/p>\n

\u201cMainly it will be for the transport of domestic cargo, serving South Africa and Tanzania, but also other countries at a regional level,\u201d explained Theunis Crous, after the public presentation of the LAM Cargo brand and the company\u2019s first exclusively cargo aircraft at Maputo airport.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are facing a new era in LAM\u2019s cargo transport services,\u201d the general director said at the launch of the company\u2019s Cargo and Correio Expresso services, which will use the new aircraft, acquired under leasing.<\/p>\n

The new Boeing 737-300F has a cargo capacity per flight of 17 tons and joins LAM\u2019s fleet, which also includes one Boeing 737-700, three Bombardier Q400s, three Bombardier CRJ 900s and three Embraer 145s, all for passengers and with a cargo capacity per flight that varies between 1.2 and five tons.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe start of this cargo service represents eight months of preparation,\u201d the LAM general director highlighted.<\/p>\n

Theunis Crous is also general director of the South African Fly Modern Ark (FMA), appointed by the Mozambican government in April last year to mastermind the recovery of LAM, and who took on the role of general director of the airline this month.<\/p>\n

LAM operates regular passenger flights to the country\u2019s 10 provincial capitals and to the Mozambican cities of Vilanculos and Nacala. Regionally, it also flies to Johannesburg and Cape Town (South Africa), Dar-Es-Salaam (Tanzania), Harare (Zimbabwe) and Lusaka (Zambia), with the launch of flights to Lilongwe (Malawi) and Nairobi (Kenya).<\/p>\n

LAM has also been flying three times a week to Lisbon since last December, the only intercontinental destination it currently serves.<\/p>\n
