Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Mozambique\u2019s publicly-owned electricity company, EDM, has recorded, over the last year, a financial loss of five billion meticais (78.3 million dollars at the current exchange rate) as a result of damage of equipment by criminals across the country, as well as illegal connections.<\/p>\n

According to EDM Executive Director, Noel Govene, who was speaking recently at the signing ceremony of a Memorandum of Understanding between EDM and the Institute for Scholarships (IBE), \u201cin 2023 alone, EDM recorded losses of around five billion Meticais, an amount that could have been used to connect more Mozambican households to the National Electricity Grid.\u201d<\/p>\n

The signed Memorandum aims to ensure the award of paid professional internships to recently graduated IBE students, both inside and outside the country, in the company\u2019s areas of activity, with priority given to Electrical Engineering.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a cooperation instrument that will also prioritize gender equality, one of EDM\u2019s strategic objectives, in that the selection of technical-vocational students or graduates for training will pay special attention to the participation of women\u201d, said Govene.<\/p>\n

For her part, the Director of the IBE, Carla Caomba, said that this act represents the first partnership of its kind that the institution has established in order to respond to one of the major challenges that the organization faces, that is, supporting recently-graduated scholarship students in professional internships.<\/p>\n

\u201cProfessional internships play a crucial role in the training of students, especially in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths, providing an essential bridge between theoretical learning and practical application in the real world\u201d, Caomba said.<\/p>\n
