Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>A US court has scheduled July 29th for the start of the trial of former Finance Minister of Mozambique Manuel Chang, according to a report brought by the Mozambican NGO Center for Public Integrity (CIP) .
\nAccording to CIP, the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) has filed a new indictment against Manuel Chang, dated December 21, 2023.
\n\u201cThe trial is scheduled to begin on July 29, 2024, in Brooklyn, New York, in the same courtroom where Jean Boustani was tried in 2019.,\u201d reads the CIP report.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, at a preliminary hearing held on March 25, the judge in the case authorized the US government to search Manuel Chang\u2019s cell phone, seized by South African authorities on December 29, 2018 [see transcript HERE<\/b>], which may bring new information to the case.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the CIP report notes, Chang\u2019s trial will coincide with the electoral campaign period for the general elections in Mozambique.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the moment, the prosecution (DOJ) and Chang\u2019s defence, which is the law firm Ford O\u2019Brien Landy LLP, are discussing preliminary issues known in US criminal law as motions in limine,\u201d reads the CIP report.<\/p>\n

Chang denies all charges and pleaded not guilty.<\/p>\n

Chang has been in prison in New York since July last year, after being extradited from South Africa, where he had been arrested in 2018 on a U.S. government warrant.
