Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Tobacco production in Mozambique grew by 23% in 2023, compared to the previous year, to a value of 4,475 million meticais (almost \u20ac65 million), according to budget execution data that Lusa had access to on Friday.<\/p>\n

According to the report from the Ministry of Economy and Finance, this performance compares with the 3,640 million meticais (\u20ac52.5 million) achieved in 2022.<\/p>\n

In the 2022-2023 agricultural year, Mozambique had a tobacco cultivation area of 76,850 hectares, and produced 65,856 tons of tobacco, a drop of 15% compared to the previous year.<\/p>\n

Mozambique has the eighth largest tobacco growing area in the world, according to a World Health Organization (WHO) report released in 2023. With 91,469 hectares available for tobacco cultivation, Mozambique is the third largest producer in Africa after Zimbabwe (112,770 hectares) and Malawi (100,962).<\/p>\n

Brazil, with the third largest cultivation area (357,230 hectares), and Mozambique are the only nations from the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP) referenced in the WHO report.<\/p>\n

The document identifies the 50 countries with the largest area of cultivation of this plant, once classified as medicinal but now the target of criticism and political measures against mass use.<\/p>\n
