Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>A consortium formed by the Portuguese group Visabeira Infraestruturas and the company Electrotec SA has won three contracts valued at $24.5 million (1.5 billion meticais) as part of the implementation of the \u201cProEnergia\u201d project launched by Electricidade de Moc\u0327ambique (EDM), aimed at expanding energy access to rural areas, potentially benefiting over 200,000 families.<\/p>\n

According to a publication by Lusa on Wednesday (10), the first contract, totaling $4.9 million (309.6 million meticais), involves the construction of 550 kilometers of a 33 kV conductor and 166 kilometers of a 0.4 kV low-voltage line, as well as the installation of 165 distribution transformers mounted on poles, electrical connections to 42,181 households, installation of 3,020 street lighting poles, and replacement of 2,140 other poles in the Manica province.<\/p>\n

The communication outlet highlighted that the second contract, covering the province of Tete, will cost over $6.1 million (385.5 million meticais) and entail the construction of 751 kilometers of a 33 kV conductor and 235 kilometers of 0.4 kV low-voltage line, as well as the installation of 275 distribution transformers mounted on poles, electrical connections to 51,946 households, and installation of 4,680 street lighting poles.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe third contract, focused on the Zambe\u0301zia province, valued at almost $13.5 million (853.2 million meticais), envisages the construction of 1,866 kilometers of a 33 kV conductor and 660 kilometers of 0.4 kV low-voltage line, and likewise the installation of 547 distribution transformers mounted on poles, electrical connections to 108,165 households, and installation of 10,780 street lighting poles,\u201d concluded the report.<\/p>\n

In 2023, Mozambique completed over 500,000 new household electricity connections, raising the coverage rate to over 50%. Most of the new connections were made through the National Electric Grid (REN).<\/p>\n

The country aims to achieve universal access to energy by 2030 through measures including the expansion of electrical infrastructure and off-grid solutions, according to the Energy Transition Strategy (ETS). \u201cNetwork expansion will be crucial to ensuring universal access to both electric and thermal energy. To achieve this goal, approximately 2.5 million new grid connections and two million off-grid connections will be needed,\u201d emphasized the report.<\/p>\n
