Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The review approved on Tuesday of the electoral package relating to the presidential, legislative and Provincial Assembly elections on Tuesday will force the Nacional Elections Commission (CNE) to review the electoral calendar to accommodate the new dates set by the law regulating the election of the President of the Republic and deputies, as well as by the law regulating the election of members of the Provincial Assemblies and provincial governors.<\/p>\n

In accordance with the draft revision of Law No. 2\/2019, of 31 May, which establishes the legal framework relating to the election of the President of the Republic and the deputies of the Assembly of the Republic, as consulted by \u2018Carta\u2019, the deadline for submitting candidacies for the Presidency of the Republic and for deputies has been reduced from 120 to 106 days before the election date.<\/p>\n

According to Carta\u2019s calculations, the deadline for submitting candidacies is therefore June 25, 2024, as the election takes place on October 9th.<\/p>\n

It should be recalled that, in the current CNE calendar, candidacies for Ponta Vermelha should be submitted to the Constitutional Council between the 13th of May and the 10th of June, a period in which candidacies for deputies of the assembly should also be submitted to the CNE, alongside those for provincial governor and members of provincial assemblies. With the new laws, a submission of these candidacies is due to begin on May 28th.<\/p>\n

The document approved by consensus by the three parliamentary groups (Frelimo, Renamo and MDM) also establishes the change in the period for publishing the map of the distribution of mandates, from 180 days before the election to 126 days. In our newspaper\u2019s accounts, the CNE must publish the aforementioned documents by June 5th.<\/p>\n

However, contrary to the current scenario, political parties will now have only 20 days (between the deadlines for publishing the map and the submission of candidacies) to prepare their candidacy files for the legislative elections, compared to the current 60 days. That is, political formations will have 40 days less to elect candidates for deputies and prepare the necessary documents for their candidacy.<\/p>\n

It should be noted that this will be the second review of the electoral calendar, after that taking place last February, following the review of the Voter Registration Law, which forced electoral bodies to review the dates for the start of voter registration, as well as for the registration of political parties interested in running.<\/p>\n
