UEFA\u2019s continental competitions (Champions League, Europa League and Conference League) are drawing to close, as are the national championships. Portugal is no exception and, at the highest level of Portuguese football, there is one Mozambican who shines out. His name is Geny Catamo.<\/p>\n

Born in Maputo on January 26, 2001, Catamo is one of the biggest promises of the new generation of Mozambican players.<\/p>\n

After having represented Maxaquene and Black Bulls in Mozambique, Catamo left for Portugal to try his luck there, and started out in Amora\u2019s under-19 team. At the Greater Lisbon club, Catamo;s performance caught the attention of Sporting, and he moved to one of the biggest emblems of Portuguese football.<\/p>\n

Geny Catamo started with the under-19s, played for Sporting\u2019s B and under-23 teams and then represented Vito\u0301ria Sport Clube and Mari\u0301timo on loan. In this 2023\/24 season, Catamo has been a regular presence among coach Ru\u0301ben Amorim\u2019s pick. In fact, the Mozambican international has played a leading role in Sporting\u2019s campaign which, for those who want to place a football bet, is favourite to win the Portuguese title this season (with odds of 1.05 at the time of writing).<\/p>\n

At a time when African sport is not going through the best of times, Geny Catamo stands out as one of the country\u2019s biggest sporting references.<\/p>\n

If there is one moment that marks Catamo\u2019s season from an individual point of view, that moment is certainly the duel with Benfica, Sporting\u2019s biggest rival.<\/p>\n

Playing at Alvalade in a decisive match for the title of champion, Sporting took the lead in the first minute, thanks to a goal scored by Geny Catamo. Benfica came from behind and tied in the final moments of the first half, but Geny Catamo had an ace up his sleeve; that would allow Sporting to take another giant step towards winning the title of national champion. In stoppage time, Geny Catamo, with a great kick, made it two to one and gave his team the three points, thus achieving a very important victory at an absolutely decisive moment of the season.<\/p>\n

Catamo\u2019s qualities did not go unnoticed by Mozambican coach Chiquinho Conde, who would rely on his services for the African Cup of Nations held in Co\u0302te d\u2019Ivoire in January of this year.<\/p>\n

Catamo was a starter in the game against Cape Verde (3-0), and against Ghana (2-2), having scored one of the Mozambican team\u2019s two goals in that match. The player is likely to continue being called up for the national team, and play an important role in its attempts to reach the final stages of major competitions.<\/p>\n
