Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Mozambique\u2019s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation has been in New York since Sunday, to participate, this week, in the final event of Mozambique\u2019s monthly presidency of the United Nations Security Council.<\/p>\n

Vero\u0301nica Macamo will on Tuesday chair one of the signature events of Mozambique\u2019s May presidency of the Security Council, an open debate titled \u201cMaintenance of international peace and security: the role of women and young people\u2019. Anticipated attendees include Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo; Assistant Secretary-General for Youth Affairs, Felipe Paullier; UN Women Executive Director Sima Sami Bahous; and AU Youth Ambassador for Peace for West Africa, Simone Mbode Diouf.<\/p>\n

Open debates are an integral part of the special programs drawn up by the countries that preside over the UN Security Council.<\/p>\n

This will be the second special event of this presidency and the first at ministerial level.<\/p>\n

Last week, Mozambique promoted a debate on the protection of civilians in armed conflicts, in the context of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the United Nations resolution on the matter.<\/p>\n

On that occasion, Permanent Representative of Mozambique to the UN, Pedro Commisssa\u0301rio, noted that ending conflicts was the best way to protect civilians, not least because conflicts are increasing the number of displaced people in the world.<\/p>\n

Conflict continues to be the leading cause of forced displacement, with a record 110 million people affected worldwide.<\/p>\n

To make matters worse, a disturbingly large number of aid workers are themselves deliberate targets of violence, hostage taking and murder.<\/p>\n

In this regard, Pedro Comissa\u0301rio highlighted the creation of the Local Force to combat terrorism, in Cabo Delgado, as one of the main actions that demonstrate the Mozambican government\u2019s concern in protecting civilians in conflict situations.<\/p>\n
