Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The Minister of Land and Environment, Ivete Maibasse, inaugurated the new facilities of the Environmental Protection Area of the Primeiras and Segundas Islands on Wednesday in Angoche, Nampula province. The infrastructure cost nearly seven million Meticais.<\/p>\n

This area is one of the largest marine conservation areas in Africa, located between the provinces of Nampula and Zambe\u0301zia. It was built with funds from the government and partners, aiming to enhance environmental conservation and accelerate service delivery.<\/p>\n

Minister Ivete Maibasse emphasized that the new facilities of the Environmental Protection Area of the Primeiras and Segundas Islands will contribute to the improvement of environmental protection strategies.<\/p>\n

The Environmental Protection Area of the Primeiras and Segundas Islands was the first to be established in the country in 2012.<\/p>\n

The archipelago is part of the Western Indian Ocean Marine Eco-region, which extends from southern Somalia to the coast of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa.<\/p>\n

Launch of the Land-Use Planning for the Primeiras and Segundas Islands<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, the government initiated public consultations for the development of a land-use planning strategy for the Primeiras and Segundas Islands. This initiative aims to ensure the protection and sustainability of one of the world\u2019s largest aquatic ecosystems, located in the northern part of the country.<\/p>\n

Covering an area of approximately one million hectares, the archipelago, considered one of the largest in Africa, is not immune to climatic risks and human activities that threaten species survival.<\/p>\n

In this context, the government considers the development of a land-use plan urgent to protect the archipelago, which spans the coast of the Moma, Angoche, Larde, and Mucubela districts in the provinces of Nampula and Zambe\u0301zia.<\/p>\n

The local government stresses the need to respect the rights of communities, which are highly vulnerable to extreme events.<\/p>\n

According to the government, the plan will establish parameters and conditions for the use of ecological zones and set limits on human economic activities.<\/p>\n
