Africa-Press<\/a> – Mozambique<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>The Mozambican police announced on Monday a second death following an attack by an armed group in Muanza, central Mozambique, on 9 September, attributed to former Renamo guerrilla dissidents.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was carried out by the Renamo military junta\u201d and in response, the authorities are deploying \u201cthroughout the district with very close indication of where this group of bandits is circulating,\u201d Joaquim Sive, Sofala provincial police commander said.<\/p>\n

Ten armed men killed a woman and injured two shopkeepers during a robbery at a commercial establishment in Muanza district, and one of the injured died on the way to hospital, the police said.<\/p>\n

The assailants were armed with firearms and machetes and seized food and other goods.<\/p>\n

Joaquim Sive was speaking to journalists today, moments after the delivery of 13 vehicles to district commanders in the province that will give \u201cgreater mobility\u201d to respond to cases such as this.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo commander will be able to say that he didn\u2019t respond to a request in his district because he didn\u2019t have transport,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The attack occurred three days after the leader of the Renamo military junta, Mariano Nhongo, expressed his intention to negotiate the demands of the dissident group with the government.<\/p>\n

The group disagrees with the terms of the Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration (DDR) process arising from the peace agreement signed in August 2019 between Renamo and the Government.<\/p>\n

The former guerrillas, now dissidents of the largest opposition party, have since been attributed with the authorship of several armed attacks against civilian targets and the defence and security forces killing around 30 people.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
