Africa-Press<\/a> – Mozambique<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>Jose Domingos, the general secretary of the Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM), the country\u2019s second largest opposition Party, on Monday submitted his candidacy to become the Party\u2019s next President.<\/p>\n

The election is scheduled to take place at an MDM congress in early December, and was precipitated by the death of the party\u2019s founder and first leader, Daviz Simango, in February<\/p>\n

Cited by the independent television station, STV, Domingos, whose candidacy was tabled three days before the deadline, reiterated appeals for unity within the party\u2019s ranks.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am happy because once more members have shown support for the MDM and have trusted me as a candidate to succeed the late Daviz Simango. Along the new path, we hope to have much unity and we will forgive anyone who opposed its continuity,\u201d Domingos said.<\/p>\n

The race for the succession has been marked by divisions among MDM members. In August, the MDM Youth League openly expressed support for Lutero Simango, brother of the late leader, and not for Domingos. But he has declared his commitment to move forward with the party.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn politics, we often have rivals. There are some people who believe we are plunged into a power struggle for the succession, but will keep working for fulfillment of the party\u2019s goals,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

In August, Silverio Ronguane, an MDM parliamentary deputy, became the first member to submit his candidacy for the Party\u2019s next President.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
