Africa-Press<\/a> – Mozambique<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>Dom Alexandre Jos\u00e9 Maria dos Santos, the first archbishop and cardinal of the Catholic Church, a native of Mozambique, died on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Dom Alexandre was Archbishop of Maputo between 1975 and 2003, and was Archbishop Emeritus of this diocese.<\/p>\n

During his ministry he was committed to the cause of peace, having directly contributed to the end of the civil war in 1992.<\/p>\n

Dom Alexandre dos Santoo contributed to greater access to education, having founded the Universidade S\u00e3o Tom\u00e1s de Mo\u00e7ambique (USTM) in 2007.<\/p>\n

He supported social causes, having been one of the founders and the first president of Caritas de Mo\u00e7ambique.<\/p>\n

In recent years he made his contribution through the Funda\u00e7\u00e3o Cardinal Dom Alexandre Jos\u00e9 Maria dos Santos.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
