Africa-Press<\/a> – Mozambique<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>The kidnapping of Doctor Basit Gani in Maputo on Thursday morning is a serious sign of the deteriorating security situation in the country, and in Maputo city in particular, according to the Association of Doctors and the Order Doctors of Mozambique, who, in an open letter, demand that the President of the Republic intervene, through the institutions he directs, to put an end to the kidnappings.<\/p>\n

The President of the Association of Doctors of Mozambique, Milton Tatia, said, with some concern, that the security situation of Mozambicans is getting worse every day, aggravated by criminal acts and undermining the necessary confidence in public institutions.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe abduction of Dr Basit Gani, a young doctor working at the Maputo Private Hospital, is a serious sign of the deteriorating security situation in Mozambique and in the city of Maputo, in particular, which could have worrying consequences for health professionals in a sector already martyred by Covid-19 and its effects,\u201d Tatia said.<\/p>\n

The doctors condemned the incident, call for respect for the sector and the effort doctors have made to secure and safeguard the health of Mozambicans.<\/p>\n

Tatia further called for steps to be taken to restore to freedom the health professional, whose presence was sorely needed within the medical community, and to his family in particular.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are aware that abduction is a difficult phenomenon to combat, however it is the duty of the defence and security forces to do everything to restore freedom to citizens who are victims of this evil,\u201d Tatia added.<\/p>\n

\u201cDoctors have been exercising their functions in the most difficult working conditions, and have not stinted in their efforts to take care of the Mozambican population, even in times of pandemic,\u201d he highlighted.<\/p>\n

In turn, the Chairman of the Medical Association of Mozambique, Gilberto Manhi\u00e7a, said that safety was a fundamental precondition for the success of any activity, and that, without it, patients could not be given the necessary attention.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is not possible for us to have a calm, studied approach, with the characteristic dedication and competence, in circumstances such as that our colleague is enduring,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n

Doctor Basit Gani\u2019s colleagues say they were surprised to hear that he had been kidnapped, since, at work, he had shown no signs of concern or of having received threats.<\/p>\n
