Africa-Press<\/a> – Mozambique<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>Military forces of Mozambique and supporting countries on Wednesday shot and killed a terrorist leader who reportedly ordered the massacre of 52 people in Cabo Delgado a year and a half ago, the President of the Republic and the general commander of the police have announced.<\/p>\n

The joint forces \u201ckilled one of the members of the [insurgent] group\u2019s leadership, called Muhamudu,\u201d President Nyusi said on Thursday in a speech at the Special Forces Training School in Makandzene, on the outskirts of Maputo, cited this Friday by news agencies.<\/p>\n

Speaking on the same occasion, General Commander of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) Bernardino Rafael said that the man was shot in an ambush in Limala, a village nine kilometres from the administrative post of Mbau.<\/p>\n

Mbau is in the district of Moc\u00edmboa da Praia, and was the location of the rebel groups\u2019 Siri 1 and Siri 2 bases, since recovered by the Mozambican and Rwandese forces who reconquered Moc\u00edmboa da Praia in early August.<\/p>\n

Bernardino Rafael says that the terrorist leader and others were attempting to escape, \u201cbut not all succeeded\u201d.<\/p>\n

One of Muhamudu\u2019s prominent accomplices had already been killed, Rafael added: \u201cAbdulai was killed in confrontation with our forces in late 2020.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to the government, the Xitaxi massacre took place on April 8, 2020. The bodies of 52 people killed during an onslaught by rebel groups in Muidumbe district which lasted several days were found in the village which gave its name to the atrocity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
