Africa-Press<\/a> – Mozambique<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>\u201cShameful\u201d and \u201can evil crime\u201d is how Renamo, Mozambique\u2019s largest opposition party, on Thursday characterised the destruction of a memorial erected at the place in Amatongas, Manica province, where Afonso Dhlakama and his convoy were attacked on 25 September, 2015.<\/p>\n

A total of 19 Renamo guerrillas died in the attack (according to the government \u2013 Renamo reports 12 casualties), just days after Afonso Dhlakama escaped another attack \u2013 in Chibata \u2013 unharmed.<\/p>\n

The memorial was found destroyed on October 4th.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s very sad, and only demonstrates the smallness of our opponents,\u201d said Renamo deputy Angelina Enoque. \u201cIt\u2019s shameful and macabre.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her party could not comprehend the motivation for the memorial\u2019s destruction, Enoque said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis [destruction of the memorial] doesn\u2019t make any difference to what happened on September 25, 2015,\u201d she stressed.<\/p>\n

For her, the most significant aspect of the event was that it \u201chappened on a day when we were celebrating peace (\u2026) What kind of peace?\u201d<\/p>\n

Complaint to police<\/b><\/p>\n

Renamo secretary general Andr\u00e9 Magibire said that the party would file a criminal complaint with the police, so that the police agent whose identification document was found at the scene could be investigated.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn this place, when our colleagues came, they picked up the identity card of one of the perpetrators of this act. He is an agent of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique. (\u2026) This is proof that the police are at the service of the Frelimo party. We\u2019re going to sue him,\u201d Magibire said just before a meeting with the governor of Manica.<\/p>\n

Both the police and Frelimo declined to comment on the matter.<\/p>\n
