Africa-Press<\/a> – Mozambique<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>The exhibition \u201cSurrealism Beyond Borders\u201d opens to the public on Monday, at The Metropolitan Museum of Art [The Met], in New York, to present works by artists from 45 countries, including five Portuguese-speaking names, in a retelling of the artistic movement that spanned the globe.<\/p>\n

The exhibition then moves on 24 February next year at the Tate Modern, in London, displaying it until 29 August.<\/p>\n

Interviewed by Lusa in July, a source from the Tate confirmed that the exhibition includes works by Artur do Cruzeiro Seixas (1920-2020), Malangatana (1936-2011), Fernando Lemos (1926-2019), Ant\u00f3nio Pedro (1909-1966) and Ant\u00f3nio de Azevedo (1889-1968).<\/p>\n

Surrealism starts from a \u201crevolutionary idea ignited in Paris around 1924, which asserted the unconscious and dreams over the familiar and every day,\u201d the text available on the Metropolitan Museum of Art\u2019s website says.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile Surrealism could generate works that were often poetic and even humorous, it was also used as a more serious weapon in the fight for political, social and personal freedom by many artists internationally,\u201d adds the museum. At the same time, the Tate aspires to \u201crewrite the history\u201d of the movement through this show.<\/p>\n

The exhibition aims to go beyond the focus on surrealism through a Western European perspective: \u201cThis show reconsiders the true \u2018movement\u2019 of surrealism across boundaries of geography and chronology \u2013 and within networks ranging from Eastern Europe to the Caribbean, Asia to North Africa, and Australia to Latin America.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIncluding nearly eight decades of work produced in 45 countries, \u2018Surrealism Beyond Borders\u2019 offers a fresh take on the collective concerns and exchanges that reposition the appreciation of this revolutionary, global movement,\u201d the Metropolitan Museum\u2019s website can read.<\/p>\n

In a statement from the \u2018Met\u2019, the museum\u2019s curator of the exhibition, Stephanie D\u2019Alessandro, recalls that \u201cSurrealism is inherently dynamic and has travelled and evolved from place to place and time to time\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cIts scope is (and always has been) international and, more specifically, transnational \u2013 extending beyond national borders to unite ideas and people, while remaining specific and local in its liberating force,\u201d D\u2019Alessandro added.<\/p>\n

The exhibition will be spread across eight rooms revisiting familiar themes of surrealism such as its \u201cexploration of the unconscious\u201d, but doing so from a \u201cnew and broad perspective, both geographically and temporally\u201d.<\/p>\n

Thus, the \u201ciconic\u201d painting \u201cChildren Threatened by a Nightingale\u201d by Max Ernst will be together with a less well-known work such as \u201cLandru at the Hotel, Paris\u201d by Antonio Berni.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
