Africa-Press<\/a> – Mozambique<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>Mozambique is the first country to receive results-based payments for reduced emissions from deforestation and forest degradation. The payment of approximately USD 6.4 million for reducing 1.28 million tons of carbon emissions is the first to be made by the Forest Carbon Partnership Fund (FCPF), a program that aims to reduce deforestation and land degradation in nine districts of Zamb\u00e9zia Province, namely, Mocuba, Mulevala, Mocubela, Alto-Molocue, Maganja da Costa, Pebane, Ile, Gil\u00e9 and G\u00faru\u00e8.<\/p>\n

This disbursement is part of an Emissions Reduction Payment Agreement (ERPA) that provides for paying up to USD 50 million if the country manages to reduce at least 10 million tons of emissions resulting from deforestation and forest degradation simultaneously increase carbon sequestration for the period from 2018 to 2024 \u2013 known<\/p>\n

as REDD+.<\/p>\n

The payment is an acknowledgment of Mozambique\u2019s contribution to the implementation of data reduction activities, such as adopting sustainable agricultural practices, monitoring the use of forest resources or restoring degraded lands. Local communities in the nine districts receive a share of the payments according to their contribution to reducing deforestation.<\/p>\n

In this context, the Government of Mozambique, represented by the Ministry of Land and Environment in coordination with the National Sustainable Development Fund and the World Bank office in Mozambique, will hold, on October 15, 2021, at 2 pm, at the Radisson Blu Hotel, in Maputo, a ceremony for the delivery to Mozambique of the First Payment for Emission Reduction.<\/p>\n

The ceremony will be led by Her Excellency Minister of Land and Environment, Ivete Maibaze, and will be attended by the Global Director of Climate Change, Bernice Van Bronkhorst, Representatives from the Private Sector, Civil Society, academic and research institutions, among others.<\/p>\n
