Africa-Press<\/a> – Mozambique<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>The Confederation of Economic Associations of Mozambique (CTA) on Saturday demanded that mechanisms be put in place to curb the wave of kidnappings in the country, offering to help the government improve the efficiency of the authorities fighting crime.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf material support is needed to train the specific units that deal with this matter of kidnappings, we are available to coordinate a campaign in which businesspeople contribute and support the Government in responding,\u201d the country\u2019s largest employer association says in a statement.<\/p>\n

For Mozambican employers, the growing number of abduction cases in the country reveals alarming levels of violence within society, with a direct impact on the business environment.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe CTA condemns these horrendous crimes and vehemently demands that the competent authorities immediately and correctly activate mechanisms to combat these crimes efficiently, concretely and with visible results,\u201d the statement adds.<\/p>\n

The main Mozambican cities have recently suffered from a wave of kidnappings, mainly targeting businessmen and their families.<\/p>\n

Last week, two individuals \u2013 a doctor and an entrepreneur linked to the catering business \u2013 were kidnapped in the Mozambican capital within the space of less than an hour.<\/p>\n

On Friday, the eldest son of the president of the Business Confederation of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CE-CPLP), Mozambican Salimo Abdula, was kidnapped, although this instance occurred in South Africa.<\/p>\n

In December, President Filipe Nyusi mentioned the possibility of creating an anti-kidnapping police unit to fight the crime wave taking place in Mozambique\u2019s main cities. More than 10 cases were registered in 2020.<\/p>\n
