{"id":757,"date":"2021-06-14T15:28:05","date_gmt":"2021-06-14T15:28:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/mozambique\/?p=757"},"modified":"2021-06-14T15:28:05","modified_gmt":"2021-06-14T15:28:05","slug":"total-reduces-workforce-in-mozambique-lusa-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/mozambique\/economy\/total-reduces-workforce-in-mozambique-lusa-report","title":{"rendered":"Total reduces workforce in Mozambique \u2013 Lusa report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>AfricaPress-mozambique:<\/strong> French oil company Total told Lusa on Friday (June 11) that it had reduced its workforce in Mozambique following the armed attack by rebels on Palma, capital of the Cabo Delgado district hosting the suspended gas project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFollowing the \u2018force majeure\u2019 decision due to the security situation in northern Cabo Delgado, Total E&amp;P Mozambique Area 1 [the operator of the Mozambique liquefied natural gas project] confirms that it has reduced its workforce,\u201d a source at Total said.<br \/>\nThe same source said that the reduction was made \u201cas discussed with the authorities and in accordance with Mozambican legislation\u201d, but without specifying the number of jobs in question and how they had been reduced.<\/p>\n<p>The company was reacting to testimonies recorded by Lusa from workers hired directly by Total, according to which June \u201cis the last month for which the company\u00a0is paying salaries\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The reduction comes after the company and the subcontractors pulled all staff from the project site on the Afungi peninsula during the week following the March 24 attack on the town of Palma, about 10 kilometres away.<\/p>\n<p>The project consortium expected to have around 6,000 workers at the project\u2019s implementation site at this point in time, including both direct employees and subcontractors, the vast majority of them Mozambicans.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, of the US$20 billion (\u20ac16.5 billion) investment \u2013 the largest private investment in Africa \u2013 12.5% was expected, during construction, to be channelled to local companies.<\/p>\n<p>Mozambique\u2019s Confederation of Economic Associations estimates that losses to the Mozambique business sector resulting from the suspension amount to US$148 million (\u20ac122 million).<\/p>\n<p>On April 26, Total declared `force majeure`, meaning that it was \u201cunable to perform its obligations as a result of the severe deterioration of the security situation in Cabo Delgado, a matter which is entirely out of Total\u2019s control\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Jean-Pierre Sbraire, the project\u2019s financial director, has said that the project will be delayed \u201cat least a year\u201d, implying that the start of exploitation and export of natural gas will not take place before 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Armed groups have terrorised Cabo Delagdo province since 2017, with some attacks being claimed by the `jihadist` group Islamic State.
