Africa-Press<\/a> – Mozambique<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>Relatives of the victims of the\u00c2 Mbuzini\u00c2 crash that killed Mozambique\u2019s President Samora Machel and 34 others asked the South African and Mozambican authorities on Tuesday to reopen the commission of inquiry into the causes of the disaster.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe appeal to the South African and Mozambican government to reactivate the investigation commission, to determine the causes of this tragic accident and find those responsible for the Mbuzini tragedy. This is the question we often ask,\u201d said Alberto J\u00c3\u00banior, son of the former National Chief of Protocol [Alberto Cangela de Mendon\u00c3\u00a7a], speaking on behalf of the victims\u2019 families.<\/p>\n

The intervention took place during a ceremony in Mbuzini, South Africa, at the memorial and museum created at the crash site and marking the 35th anniversary of the plane crash. The event was attended by presidents Cyril Ramaphosa, from South Africa, and Filipe Nyusi, from Mozambique.<\/p>\n

According to Alberto J\u00c3\u00banior, there are still many unanswered questions: \u201cThe truth remains unknown,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere seems to be no urgency\u201d\u00c2\u00b4<\/b><\/p>\n

Samora Machel J\u00c3\u00banior, son of the first Mozambican president, also told Lusa on Tuesday that the accident needed to be explained and that the authorities lacked \u201curgency\u201d regarding the investigation.<\/p>\n

Speaking on the sidelines of the memorial ceremony, Machel J\u00c3\u00banior added that, from the family\u2019s point of view, \u201cthere doesn\u2019t seem to be much urgency to resolve this case\u201d.<\/p>\n

While acknowledging the complexity of the case, Machel J\u00c3\u00banior said that clarification could bring \u201csome peace\u201d to the family, even after 35 years.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe know this is not a simple process. We realize that it takes some time, but we need to bring some peace of mind to the family. We want to straighten this out and move on,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The first Mozambican president died on October 19, 1986, when a Tupolev plane crashed in South Africa\u2019s mountainous Lebombo area, near the border with Mozambique.<\/p>\n

Samora Machel and another 25 Mozambican members of his escort (26 persons),\u00c2 two ambassadors,\u00c2 four members of the Soviet crew and\u00c2 two Cuban doctors died. As a result, a total of 34 people died in the crash of the TU 134. There survived\u00c2 nine Mozambicans and the Soviet board engineer, thus 10 persons. A total of 44 people were in the plane on this flight. One of the survivors died in January 1987 as a result of the crash: Eus\u00c3\u00a9bio Guido Martinho. This increased the number of deaths to 35.<\/p>\n

The accident sparked allegations of sabotage against the then South African \u2018apartheid\u2019 administration. An inquiry initiated by the country\u2019s Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) in 1994 was inconclusive as to its causes.<\/p>\n

Samora Machel, 53, was returning from a conference of African leaders in Lusaka, Zambia, and lost his life along with fellow party members, ministers, dignitaries, officials, flight attendants\u00c2 and members of the Russian aircraft\u2019s crew.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
