Africa-Press<\/a> – Mozambique<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>The Mozambican health authorities announced on Tuesday that 24 new cases of the Covid-19 respiratory disease were diagnosed in the previous 24 hours.<\/p>\n

According to a Tuesday press release from the Health Ministry, since the start of the pandemic 928,252 people have been tested for the coronav\u00edrus that causes Covid-19, 1,365 of them in the previous 24 hours.<\/p>\n

1,341 of these cases yielded negative results, while 24 people tested positive for the virus. This brought the number of people diagnosed with Covid-19 in Mozambique to 151,136.<\/p>\n

Of the cases identified on Tuesday, 16 were men and eight were women. Three were children under the age of 15, and one was over 65 years old. 10 of the new cases came from Maputo city and nine from the northern province of Cabo Delgado. There were also three cases from Nampula, one from Niassa and one from Sofala. No positive cases were reported from the other seven provinces.<\/p>\n

The positivity rate (the percentage of people tested found to be carrying the virus) on Tuesday was 1.8 per cent. Over the previous week, the positivity rates were as follows:<\/p>\n

Monday, 18 October 1.9 per cent<\/p>\n

Sunday, 17 October 0.7 per cent<\/p>\n

Saturday, 16 October 1.3 per cent<\/p>\n

Friday, 15 October 1.3 per cent<\/p>\n

Thursday, 14 October 1 per cent<\/p>\n

Wednesday, 13 October 1.8 per cent<\/p>\n

Tuesday, 12 October 2 per cent<\/p>\n

The Ministry reported no deaths from the disease on Tuesday. Thus the total death toll in Mozambique from Covid-19 remains 1,927.<\/p>\n

In the same 24 hour period, two new Covid-19 patients were admitted to hospital, one in Maputo and one in Niassa. No patients were discharged during the day.<\/p>\n

The number of people under medical care in the Covid-19 treatment facilities rose from eight on Monday to ten on Tuesday. Five of these patients were in Maputo, three in Niassa, one in Nampula and one in Inhambane. No Covid-19 patients were hospitalised in the other seven provinces.<\/p>\n

The Ministry also reported that on Tuesday 109 people were declared fully recovered from Covid-19 (88 in Cabo Delgado, 17 in Gaza and four in Manica). The total number of recoveries now stands at 148,583, or 98.3 per cent of all those ever diagnosed with Covid-19 in Mozambique.<\/p>\n

The number of active Covid-19 cases fell from 707 on Monday to 622 on Tuesday. The geographical distribution of the active cases was as follows: Maputo city, 308 (49.5 per cent of the total); Nampula, 197; Cabo Delgado, 47; Niassa, 21; Zambezia, 18; Inhambane, 16; Maputo province, six; Gaza, five; Manica, two; Tete, one; and Sofala, one.<\/p>\n

The release reported that, over the previous 24 hours, 2,736 people received their second dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine against Covid-19. 1,828,602 people are now fully vaccinated against the disease, while 1,973,519 have received at least one dose of vaccine.<\/p>\n

The third phase of the national vaccination campaign is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, and the Health Ministry hopes to vaccinate over seven million people. Whereas the previous phases have concentrated on the cities, this phase will target both the rural and the urban population.<\/p>\n

According to the Coordinator of the Vaccination Campaign, Ivan Manhica, \u201cin the urban areas, we shall vaccinate people aged between 30 and 49\u201d \u2013 in theory, city dwellers over 50 years old should already have been vaccinated.<\/p>\n

In the countryside, in the first 15 days of this phase, \u201cwe shall prioritise people aged 50 and above. In the following fortnight, we shall cover people aged between 30 and 49\u201d.<\/p>\n

Pregnant and breastfeeding women were omitted from the initial vaccination phase, but, on the basis of new scientific evidence, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has changed its advice on these groups, and so they too will be covered in this phase.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
