Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The European Union Observation Mission (EU EOM) to the general elections in Mozambique announced on Thursday that its final report concluded that \u201cseveral irregularities and discrepancies\u201d affected the \u201cintegrity of the electoral process and results.\u201d<\/p>\n

The position was conveyed to journalists by the head of mission, Laura Ballari\u0301n this morning in Maputo, after handing over the conclusions of the Final Report of the EU Election Observation Mission<\/b> to the head of state, Daniel Chapo, with the conclusions of two months of observation of the process.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe report\u2019s conclusions point to various irregularities and discrepancies that affect the integrity of the electoral process and results in the country,\u201d said Laura Ballari\u0301n, while emphasising that \u201cin no country in the world\u201d do these European Union observation missions \u201cvalidate or invalidate the electoral results\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cHowever, the report also includes 18 recommendations aimed at strengthening and improving future electoral processes, in line with Mozambique\u2019s international commitments on democratic elections,\u201d the head of mission added, saying that the document would be made publicly available in the next few hours.<\/p>\n

In the same statements to journalists at the Presidency of the Republic, Laura Ballari\u0301n highlighted \u201cthe process of political dialogue between all parties that is taking place\u201d\u2014led by the new president, Daniel Chapo, who was sworn in on 15 January\u2014after months of post-election demonstrations and protests against the electoral process, arguing that it \u201cmust be inclusive\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are also aware that, in public statements, the president has indicated the need for a future electoral reform, which he sees as fundamental. I asked him about this, and he confirmed his intention to carry it out,\u201d she emphasised.<\/p>\n

In this sense, \u201cI want to reiterate that this report can serve as a basis and a support instrument that will allow Mozambicans to regain confidence in public institutions,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

This electoral observation mission was one of the EU\u2019s largest. It involved more than 150 people throughout the country, particularly on polling day, 9 October. Laura Ballari\u0301n stressed the European Union\u2019s and the delegation in Mozambique\u2019s willingness to \u201csupport the efforts of this electoral reform with technical assistance\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo move from words to deeds, it is necessary to define a roadmap with measures to strengthen democratic institutions in Mozambique. We believe the EU can effectively play a key role in this endeavour,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

She also said that in the coming days, she planned to meet \u201cwith different political forces and the presidential candidates\u201d, including Vena\u0302ncio Mondlane \u2013 who does not recognise the election results, claiming victory \u2013 \u201cin addition to the authorities and representatives of civil society\u201d.<\/p>\n
