Africa-Press<\/a> – Mozambique<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>Mozambican writer Paulina Chiziane is the winner of the Cam\u00f5es Prize 2021, in a choice made unanimously, Portuguese Culture Minister Gra\u00e7a Fonseca announced.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe jury unanimously decided to award the prize to Mozambican writer Paulina Chiziane, highlighting her vast production and critical reception, as well as the academic and institutional recognition of her work\u201d.<\/p>\n

The jury also mentioned the importance that she dedicates in her books to the problems of Mozambican and African women. The jury underlined her recent work in reaching out to young people, namely in building bridges between literature and other arts.<\/p>\n

Paulina Chiziane \u201chas been translated in many countries and is today one of the best-known voices in African fiction, having received several prizes and decorations\u201d.<\/p>\n

Paulina Chiziane was born in Manjacaze, Mozambique, in 1955. She studied linguistics in Maputo. She currently lives and works in Zambezia.<\/p>\n

Fiction writer, she has published several short stories in the press.<\/p>\n

She published her first novel, \u201cBalada de Amor ao Vento\u201d (1990), after the country\u2019s independence, which is also the first novel by a Mozambican woman.<\/p>\n

\u201d Ventos do Apocalipse\u201d, finished in 1991, was published in Maputo, in 1993, by the author and was published in Portugal, by Caminho, in 1999, preceding the publication of \u201cBalada de Amor ao Vento\u201d, in Portugal, by the same publisher, in 2003.<\/p>\n

Caminho also has other titles by the author published in Portugal: \u201cS\u00e9timo Juramento\u201d (2000), \u201cNiketche: Uma Hist\u00f3ria de Poligamia\u201d (2002), \u201cO Alegre Canto da Perdiz\u201d (2008).<\/p>\n

Her work also includes \u201cAs Andorinhas\u201d (2009), \u201cNa m\u00e3o de Deus\u201d and \u201cPor Quem Vibram os Tambores do Al\u00e9m\u201d (2013), \u201cNgoma Yethu: O curandeiro e o Novo Testamento\u201d (2015), \u201cO Canto dos Escravos\u201d (2017), \u201cO Curandeiro e o Novo Testamento\u201d (2018).<\/p>\n

The jury for the 33rd edition of the Cam\u00f5es Prize was made up of university professors Ana Martinho and Carlos Mendes de Sousa (Portugal), writer and researcher Jorge Alves de Lima and university professor Raul C\u00e9sar Fernandes (Brazil), and writers Tony Tcheka (Guinea-Bissau) and Teresa Manjate (Mozambique).<\/p>\n

In Brazil, only the work \u201cNiketche: Uma Hist\u00f3ria de Poligamia\u201d has been published.<\/p>\n

The Cam\u00f5es Award for literature in Portuguese language was established by Portugal and Brazil, with the purpose of distinguishing an author \u201cwhose work contributes to the projection and recognition of the literary and cultural heritage of the common language\u201d.<\/p>\n

According to the text of the constituent protocol, signed in Brasilia on 22 June 1988 and published in November of the same year, the award annually honours \u201ca Portuguese-speaking author who, by the intrinsic value of his work, has contributed to the enrichment of the literary and cultural heritage of the common language\u201d.<\/p>\n

It was first awarded in 1989 to the writer Miguel Torga.<\/p>\n

In 2019, the prize distinguished the Brazilian musician and writer Chico Buarque, author of \u201cLeite Derramado\u201d and \u201cBudapeste\u201d, among other works; in 2020, the Portuguese professor and essayist Vitor Aguiar e Silva<\/p>\n

The Cam\u00f5es Prize was awarded to Mozambican writers twice before Paulina Chiziane: Jos\u00e9 Craveirinha (1991) and Mia Couto (2013).<\/p>\n
