Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Mozambique\u2019s Minister of the Interior Amade Miquidade urgently proposes bilateral work agreements between southern African countries to face the challenges posed by migration in the region.<\/p>\n

Minister Miquidade was speaking in Maputo on Monday at the opening of the Migration Dialogue for Southern Africa (MIDSA) ministerial meeting, which runs until next Thursday.<\/p>\n

The meeting, which brings together representatives from all member countries, has as its theme \u201cReviewing approaches to safe, orderly and regular migration in the Covid-19 context\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Minister of Interior noted that SADC member states had taken preventive measures such as closing borders, imposing restrictions on travel and strengthening health control, to prevent and combat the spread of the pandemic in the region.<\/p>\n

According to Minister Miquidade, migratory flows represent, for the governments of the region, a threat to security, as some are associated with transnational organized crime and international terrorism.<\/p>\n

Minister Miquidade underlined that partners and civil society organizations must guarantee better protection of the rights of migrants, articulating the minimum standards of treatment of people in their territories.<\/p>\n

The minister also indicated that the governments of the southern region of Africa should be concerned with placing migration positively in the national agendas, so that migrants are not seen as people who take jobs away from nationals, but rather as an additional factor for economic growth.<\/p>\n
