Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Mozambique will participate in the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) with the goal of mobilising financial resources to face the climate events that cyclically devastate the country. The information was released on Monday in Maputo, during the celebrations of the 76th anniversary of the United Nations.<\/p>\n

COP 26 will bring together leaders from 196 countries to discuss advances in the fight against global warming. Mozambique, a country cyclically affected by extreme weather events, will participate in the event, which takes place from November 1st to 12th in Glasgow, Scotland, and already has well-defined objectives.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn Glasgow, Mozambique will publicise and mobilise resources for the implementation of its nationally determined contribution; the country\u2019s commitments to contribute to the global goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In this context, we are pleased to note with great satisfaction that Mozambique has become the first country to receive payments from a World Bank fund as a reward for efforts to reduce carbon emissions by combating deforestation and forest degradation,\u201d Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Manuel Gon\u00e7alves said.<\/p>\n

\u201cCOP 26 takes place in a context of growing concern in Mozambique, the region and the world in relation to the negative impacts of climate change, requiring collective efforts, at a global level, to address this phenomenon which threatens the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals,\u201d he also noted.<\/p>\n

On the occasion, the resident coordinator of the United Nations Myrta Kalaurd said that the UN would continue to support Mozambique in the management of natural disasters and the pacification of the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cMozambique is working to be resilient to all types of crises, be it health system resilience, climate resilience or resilience to violence and extremism. This resilience is what makes development sustainable. Despite the challenges the country has faced in recent years, with continued support from the UN, a culture of peace continues, through the support of the UN Secretary General\u2019s personal envoy to Mozambique,\u201d UN Resident Coordinator Myrta Kaulard said.<\/p>\n

\u201cPromoting the peaceful resolution of conflicts through communication and dialogue is the key to ensuring that Mozambicans can live in peace and without fear. We know that a sustainable, resilient and inclusive Mozambique is not possible without peace. The United Nations is committed to supporting Mozambican institutions and civil society to promote the well-being of all Mozambicans, in particular the most vulnerable and marginalised,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

The UN is concerned about the situation of displaced people in Cabo Delgado, and about contributing to the end of the drama of the populations in that part of the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are committed to rapid stabilisation and reconstruction, to guarantee conditions so that populations can return to their areas of origin. It is important that, when they return, they have access to basic services, and that the administration is already present there and conditions for self-sufficiency exist,\u201d Kaulard concluded.<\/p>\n

The event also featured a photographic exhibition on climate events in Mozambique and the resilience shown by those affected.<\/p>\n

Relationship between Mozambique and the United Nations date back to September, 1975. Celebration of the 76th anniversary of the United Nations are guided by the motto, \u201cBuilding resilience through hope to recover from Covid-19, rebuild sustainably, and respond to and respect the needs of the planet\u201d.<\/p>\n
